Activities at the Human Rights Council in September 2014

Representatives of the Coordination Group of HRE 2020 went to Geneva during the 27th Session of the Human Rights Council. HRE 2020 organised and participated in a number of events to promote the right to human rights education and mainstream reporting into existing mechanisms.

Some of the event HRE 2020 were involved in:

  1. HRE 2020 was a panelist on a side event of the Right to Human Rights Education coordinated by the OHCHR on 10 September 2014. HRE 2020 emphasised the importance of the revised version of The Right to Human Rights Education, not only to remind of State obligations to implement human rights education and training, but also as an invaluable tool to lobby governments to make good on these promises. Read more about the event and HRE 2020's presentation.
  2. HRE 2020 participated in the event Human Rights Education: Media Professionals and Journalists Make A Difference! on 16 September 2014. Organised by the NGO Working Group on Human Rights Education and Learning of the Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CoNGO)and the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training the side event explored ways to strengthen the implementation of the third phase of the World Programme for Human Rights Education (WPHRE). Read the event report for more information.
  3. HRE 2020 hosted a working lunch with the Platform for Human Rights Education and Training on 17 September 2014 to discuss how the cross-regional governmental working group can work with HRE 2020 to strengthen accountability for and implementation of HRE commitments. Diplomats from the Permanent Missions of Costa RicaSlovenia, and Switzerland, along with OHCHR staff, came together with the HRE 2020 Coordination Group to share information about their respective efforts on HRE and further develop a multi-stakeholder approach to advocate for human rights education at UN level.
